My Luminar/dubstep experience

Postby kz » 28 Feb 2010, 11:45

Although not actually Luminar, the local club, Talk is your usually piece of shit club, funky house, shite RnB and no garage made after the year 2000. It's also the place where I got beaten up and there's usually a shit atmosphere in there, so I haven't been there much recently... in fact in the past year I've only been there once.

However, there's a new owner now, which helpfully my mate's dad knows so to start it off we got in for free :teeth

Now I'm sure you've gone to see a decent DJ playing at a shit club before, and I was expecting the same... absolute crap up until say 1am when Chase & Status will come on, do an hour, then fuck off and it will be back to crap music again and I'll be stumbling off to get me cheesy chips. This didn't happen.

Firstly a mate of someone I was with was outside the club and he came up to us saying "listen guys just a warning, I wouldn't bother going in there, it's all this dubstep shit, absolutely terrible, I'm off somewhere else" that was obviously met with a :D (this being about 11pm)

So after going for a piss I was into the club and the dubstep was in full force, couldn't believe it. Went to hand my jacket in and could hear the people behind me... "what the fuck is this music about!? what a load of crap" I was laughing so turned around for a chat and they said they liked funky house lol, and they were off to some over 25s night where you will hear "normal" music!

Anyway I'm probably going on a bit and no one cares but I'm just proper happy at the consistency really. They turned it into a dubstep/DnB night not just a 1hr showcase. The crowd was obviously proper split, but that's no bad thing, most of my mates didn't even make it far into the night, faggooots. From what the MCs were saying it sounds like they're gonna have one decent night like this a month, I hope it stays like that. Whilst it lasts it's a thumbs up from me.

Yes I know I need to hit a proper night up in London, I mentioned DMZ's fifth birthday which is on next week but being a friday lots of people can't make it, not interesting in going that far for music they don't like etc. Meh. I'm trying to push Nass 2010 anyone heard of it!? Looks cool... big skating/biking event which I'm into anyway plus Andy C/Nero/Crissy Criss/Caspa and more already announced :P

Nice.

So the club is going to lose all its clientele, make no money and the owner will have to sell it after 2 months.

Enjoy it while you can kz.

That's the thing mate, it was heaving! With a different, and I must say, improved crowd. If they chuck on this kinda thing once a month I can see it working...

Probably won't last forever, but as you say, I'll enjoy whilst decent music is on my doorstep :cheesy:

That's weird, quite a lot of the people I've spoken to who went said Chase & Status were wank that night. I went to the Ramadance pre party with Funtcase at Bar Bluu Friday night - that was pretty sick.

And I think you're giving people the wrong impression of Southend - it does actually have a really big following of dubstep and underground house, you just need to look in the right places. Talk has a reputation for being the most mainstream, cheesy club in the area (although it is pretty big and successful). The reason why you heard so many negative comments about the music is probably because people turned up there expecting the same old rubbish that gets played week in, week out.

Kane - if, as kz said, they make something like this a monthly event, yet still cater for the mainstream crowd every other weekend in the month, it'll be successful. I hate everything about the club anyway, so I don't think I'd go even if there was a decent DJ playing.

kz - if you want some dirty, bass driven music come to Saks Underground this Friday - a few mates and I are putting on a night, Disco Is Dead, and it's gona be full of the stuff you're into. When we finish at 2, I think most of us are going to move on to the Royal Hotel, as they've got Sub Squad on til 4 - one of the biggest dubstep nights in the area. Would be cool to see you down there.

Cool mate I've heard of the events that go on at the Royal Hotel, so I may well check it out. My main dubstepper mate used to actually work at Saks until a few months ago, don't think she's too found of going back in there but I know she will.

I know Talk is shit, but have you been there since the re-furb? It seems a bit better in there now, although I still saw two fights that night! Through march they've got Jaguar Skills, Pendulum, and Subscape from Dub Police in there which seems pretty decent. Also got some guys from Kool Kids Klub which I've heard of... but at the same time I've been told their whole set up is a bit shit really!?

Jaguar Skills would be interesting to see, but Subscape's gona be playing at Ramadance at Bar Bluu next month anyway, so you might as well just see him there. Yeh the Kool Kids guys are supporting a lot of nights at the moment - I used to play with them last year. That Boy Kana and WholeSick are playing aren't they?

No I haven't been since the refurb, but I heard it wasn't even that much of a refurb and nothing's really changed, except for a few 'private areas'. Maybe I should check it out.

Must admit I haven't popped into Bar Bluu in a while now, though it used to be alright.

Think Murdock from KKK (lol) is there too.

As regards to the refurb no it ain't much, but nice to see a change I suppose. They've just moved the DJ stand and added a load of screens and nicer seating.

One DJ dropping Plastician's remix of Next Hype and also dropping Crissy Cris feat Fumin - Gettin Even = a happy 'Dee and a good dubstep rave.

Coz I go to a lot of the student based dubstep nights there's a lot of Jakwob type shit but last saturday was on some brostep shit, filthy muck being played, was good.

I'm hoping either Skepta beings Maximum with him or he spits while Rossi B and Luca are playing.

Ahh... yeah that looks nice man. Skepta was total waste when I saw him though, done two tracks then fucked off  got the impression he thinks he's better than he is.

Whereas, when I saw JME, he stayed for ages and was chatting to the crowd after, top guy!

Couldn't tell you what they were though. Literally, heard him come on and thought "I had better grab a drink!" get over to the bar, and he's walking off the stage :|
